Employment with many law firms is summed up well by the Queensland Law Society’s guidance for solicitors changing jobs:

There was a time, not too long ago, when many solicitors followed a fairly standard career path: sign on with a firm as an Articled Clerk, work your way up through the ranks to senior associate, salaried partner and then equity partner. Staying 20 years at the same firm was not unusual, and most changes of employment were driven by an inability to crack the top level or a change in life circumstances; few people switched firms early in their career, and a crowded resume was often seen as a red flag for potential employers.

Things have changed greatly. While the job-hopping tendencies of millennials are exaggerated, long tenures are generally a thing of the past. A report released by the Foundation for Young Australians in 2017 found that those entering the workforce now will likely have 17 changes in employment through their working lives, indicating a change of job every 3-4 years.

We are different. We care about our clients, legal services as a profession not just an industry, and actively engage in pro bono work. Not surprisingly, we also care about our staff, help them progress in their legal career and actively encourage and assist them to progress to becoming an equity principal.

Above all, to work at Brighton Langley you must be conscientious and have the right type of personality to work in adversarial law. Experience with legal work is not necessary – we can teach you if you are the right type of person for us to hire.
